About This Award

Rewarding the Science and Art of Beauty Breakthroughs

Beauty innovation has never been more sophisticated or more consequential. In laboratories and formulation studios around the world, cosmetic scientists are pioneering breakthroughs that were unimaginable a decade ago — from exosome-powered actives that communicate with skin cells at a molecular level to bio-fermented ingredients that represent a new paradigm of efficacy and sustainability combined.

The World Beauty Awards Beauty Innovation Awards exist to recognise the teams, companies, and visionaries behind these breakthroughs. We celebrate innovation across the full spectrum of beauty — from the microscopic science of a novel peptide complex to the macroscopic reinvention of packaging that eliminates plastic from the supply chain entirely.

This award honours the belief that the best beauty is also the most intelligent beauty. Whether your innovation emerged from a university biotech lab, an indie brand's formulation facility, or a multinational R&D centre with hundreds of scientists, if you have created something that genuinely advances what beauty can achieve, the World Beauty Awards wants to recognise your contribution to the industry.

Beauty Innovation Award Sub-Categories

Six distinct recognitions spanning every dimension of beauty innovation

Beauty Innovation of the Year

The headline recognition for the single most transformative innovation introduced to the beauty market during the 2025–2026 period. Open to any category of innovation — formulation, ingredient, packaging, treatment, technology, or business model — this award goes to the breakthrough that judges agree has most significantly advanced what beauty can deliver or experience.

Best Ingredient Innovation

Recognising the discovery, application, or commercialisation of a novel active ingredient or ingredient complex that delivers a proven advancement in efficacy, safety, sustainability, or sensorial experience. From exosomes and postbiotics to novel peptide sequences and biofermented extracts, this award celebrates the scientists at the frontier of cosmetic chemistry.

Packaging Innovation Award

For breakthrough innovations in beauty packaging that advance sustainability, functionality, consumer experience, or aesthetic achievement. This category celebrates refillable systems that have achieved genuine consumer adoption, packaging eliminations that maintain product integrity, and new material science applications that are moving the industry away from single-use plastic toward a circular economy.

Treatment Innovation Award

For innovations in professional and at-home beauty treatments — new modalities, protocols, technologies, or treatment systems that deliver measurable improvements in client outcomes. From next-generation cryotherapy protocols and advanced LED wavelength combinations to novel microcurrent waveforms and ultrasound delivery mechanisms, this award spans clinic and consumer.

Business Model Innovation

Recognising companies that have reimagined how beauty is produced, distributed, sold, or experienced in ways that create genuine competitive advantage. Subscription personalisation, on-demand custom formulation, circular beauty models, and peer-to-peer beauty commerce are all examples of the business model innovation this award seeks to celebrate.

Digital Beauty Innovation

For innovations at the intersection of beauty and digital technology — AI-powered formulation tools, digital skin consultation platforms, personalisation algorithms, augmented reality beauty experiences, and data-driven approaches to understanding consumer skin health. Where digital and beauty science converge, extraordinary innovation happens.

Is This You?

Who Should Nominate

Innovation comes from every corner of the beauty industry — we welcome all innovators

Beauty R&D Teams

The research and development departments at cosmetic companies — large and small — that have dedicated years to developing breakthroughs that are now reaching consumers. Your scientific rigour, your iterations, and your ultimate breakthrough deserve formal recognition on the global stage.

Cosmetic Scientists

Individual cosmetic scientists and formulation chemists who have made a significant innovation contribution — whether working within a brand, as a contract formulator, or as an independent researcher. The science behind beauty's greatest products often comes from the specific genius of an individual, and this award recognises individual as well as team achievement.

Innovation Leads at Beauty Companies

The heads of innovation, chief innovation officers, and VP-level innovation leaders at beauty companies who have led the strategic innovation agenda and brought breakthrough products, partnerships, or capabilities to their organisations. Leadership of innovation is as important as the innovation itself.

Indie Innovators

Independent beauty founders and small-brand creators who have pioneered ingredient combinations, formulation approaches, or product formats that larger brands have since followed — often without the credit they deserve. The indie community drives a disproportionate share of beauty's most meaningful innovation and this award gives it formal recognition.

Biotech Beauty Companies

Companies at the frontier of biotechnology and beauty — growing ingredients through fermentation, engineering novel proteins, developing lab-grown bio-actives, or applying synthetic biology to create beauty solutions that are cleaner, more effective, and more sustainable than their natural or synthetic predecessors.

Packaging & Material Innovators

Companies developing new materials, refill systems, coating technologies, or packaging formats for the beauty industry that advance sustainability, functionality, or consumer experience. From mycelium-based secondary packaging to infinitely recyclable aluminium primary containers and smart packaging with NFC authentication, this award covers the full breadth of packaging innovation.

Judging Standards

How We Evaluate Beauty Innovation

Our panel of cosmetic scientists, innovation experts, and beauty executives apply rigorous technical and commercial criteria

01

Genuine Novelty

The degree to which the innovation represents a true first — a discovery, application, or approach that did not exist before in the beauty industry. Judges distinguish between genuine novelty and incremental improvement, reserving the highest scores for innovations that represent meaningful departures from established approaches.

02

Proven Efficacy

Evidence that the innovation delivers on its claimed benefits — clinical studies, consumer trials, independent testing, or clear mechanistic science supporting the innovation's performance claims. Judges evaluate both the strength and the independence of the evidence base presented.

03

Commercial Viability

The innovation's ability to be produced at commercial scale with acceptable economics — cost of goods, supply chain stability, scalability, and the realistic prospect of the innovation reaching a meaningful number of consumers. Laboratory breakthroughs that cannot be commercialised are fascinating science but not yet beauty innovation.

04

Consumer Impact

The measurable improvement the innovation delivers to the consumer experience — whether through superior efficacy, enhanced safety profile, improved sensorial experience, greater convenience, reduced environmental footprint, or the creation of an entirely new beauty benefit that consumers value.

05

Sustainability Contribution

The degree to which the innovation advances beauty's sustainability agenda — reducing environmental impact, replacing non-renewable resources, eliminating harmful chemistry, enabling circularity, or improving the social and environmental conditions of ingredient sourcing. Innovation that is also genuinely sustainable is awarded additional recognition.

06

Scientific Rigor

The quality of the research, development, and testing process behind the innovation — peer-reviewed science, clinical protocols, quality standards, and regulatory compliance. Innovations that can demonstrate world-class scientific process alongside their breakthrough results earn the highest marks from our scientific panel members.

07

Industry Influence

Evidence that the innovation is already influencing or is likely to influence wider industry practice — whether through licensing, industry publication, competitive imitation (the sincerest form of flattery), or the setting of new standards that competitors feel compelled to meet or exceed.

08

Future Potential

The judges' assessment of the innovation's long-term significance — the range of applications it may enable, the scientific platforms it opens, and the scale of consumer benefit it could ultimately deliver. The most consequential innovations are those whose full potential is still being discovered.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my innovation need to be already commercially launched to be eligible?

Innovations should be at or near commercialisation to be eligible for most categories. For the Beauty Innovation of the Year and Best Ingredient Innovation categories, we require that the innovation is available or will be available commercially by the end of the current award cycle. Exceptions are made for the Scientific Innovation category, where pre-commercial innovations with compelling proof-of-concept science may be considered.

Can ingredient suppliers nominate their ingredients directly, or does it need to be the finished product brand?

Both ingredient suppliers and finished product brands are welcome to nominate. An ingredient supplier may nominate a novel active ingredient they have developed, while a brand may nominate a finished formulation that incorporates innovative ingredients or delivery systems. Both types of nomination are evaluated on equal terms by the Jury team or the Management of Golden Tree.

What level of clinical evidence is required to support a formulation innovation nomination?

We do not prescribe a minimum evidence standard, but stronger evidence yields stronger nominations. In vitro studies, consumer studies, clinical trials, and peer-reviewed publication all constitute valuable supporting evidence. Our panel is experienced at weighing different types of evidence appropriately. What matters most is that your claims are proportionate to the evidence you can present.

Is packaging innovation judged purely on sustainability, or do aesthetic and functional achievements also count?

Packaging Innovation is assessed across all dimensions — sustainability, functionality, consumer experience, and aesthetic achievement all count. A packaging innovation that is extraordinarily beautiful and functional but not sustainable can still be competitive. However, innovations that combine genuine sustainability advancement with functional and aesthetic excellence will typically outscore those that advance only one dimension.

Can a company nominate multiple innovations across different sub-categories?

Yes. If your company has multiple innovations that genuinely qualify for different sub-categories, you may submit separate nominations for each. Each nomination will be independently reviewed by the relevant panel members for that category. We encourage companies with multiple innovations to nominate each separately rather than bundling them into a single entry.

Can innovations from outside the traditional beauty industry — such as biotech or medical device companies — enter?

Yes, provided the innovation has a clear and direct application in the beauty, cosmetics, or personal care category. We actively welcome nominations from biotech companies, material science innovators, and adjacent technology sectors whose work is influencing beauty. Some of the most important beauty innovations in history came from companies that did not initially define themselves as beauty companies.
