About This Award

Beauty That Honours the Planet

The beauty industry has a profound relationship with the natural world. Its most treasured ingredients — botanical extracts, marine actives, precious oils — are gifts from ecosystems that took millennia to form. Yet for too long the industry extracted without replenishing, packaged without considering end-of-life, and formulated without accounting for the environmental impact that washes into waterways and accumulates in soils.

That era is ending, and a new generation of beauty brands is leading the transformation. From certified B Corporations that have embedded social and environmental accountability into their legal structures, to waterless formulation pioneers reducing the water footprint of an industry that has historically consumed it prodigiously, to packaging innovators eliminating single-use plastic in one of the world's most packaging-intensive consumer categories — these brands are proving that beauty and sustainability are not in tension. They are the same pursuit.

The World Beauty Awards Sustainable Beauty Awards were created to celebrate these leaders and to send a clear signal to the broader industry: sustainability is not an optional premium feature. It is the future of beauty. The brands being recognised today are the brands that will define the industry tomorrow, and the World Beauty Awards is proud to stand beside them.

Award Categories

Sustainable Beauty Award Sub-Categories

Six distinctions spanning every dimension of sustainable beauty leadership

Sustainable Beauty Brand of the Year

The flagship recognition for a beauty brand that has demonstrated leadership across the full spectrum of sustainability — from ingredient sourcing and formulation to packaging, manufacturing, distribution, and end-of-life. This is not an award for having one sustainable product; it is an award for building a genuinely sustainable beauty business from the inside out, with measurable results.

Best Eco Packaging

For beauty brands and packaging innovators that have led the industry's transition away from single-use, non-recyclable, or environmentally damaging packaging. This category recognises refillable packaging systems with proven consumer adoption, primary packaging in recycled or recyclable materials, packaging elimination innovations, and novel material science applications advancing beauty's packaging sustainability agenda.

Ethical Sourcing Award

Recognising beauty brands that have built supply chains that are fair, transparent, and regenerative — paying fair wages to farmers and harvesters, supporting ingredient source communities, maintaining supply chain traceability, and sourcing ingredients in ways that regenerate rather than deplete the ecosystems they depend on. Fairtrade certifications, direct trade programmes, and community benefit initiatives are all evaluated.

Zero Waste Beauty Innovation

For beauty brands, products, or initiatives that are actively pursuing a zero-waste model — eliminating waste at every stage of the product lifecycle from formulation and manufacturing to consumer use and end-of-life. This includes concentrated formulas that eliminate excess packaging, solid beauty formats, closed-loop packaging return programmes, and manufacturing processes achieving genuine zero-waste-to-landfill certification.

Carbon-Neutral Brand

For beauty brands that have achieved certified carbon neutrality across their operations and supply chain — through verified emissions measurement, genuine reduction programmes, and responsibly selected offset schemes for remaining emissions. Judges look for brands that are on a credible pathway toward net zero, backed by third-party verification and public reporting of progress against science-based targets.

Sustainable Beauty Leadership

A recognition for individual or organisational leadership that has moved the entire beauty industry's sustainability agenda forward — through advocacy, policy engagement, industry collaboration, pioneering standards development, or the kind of radical transparency that holds the whole industry to a higher standard. This award recognises the voices and forces that are making sustainable beauty the norm rather than the exception.

Is This You?

Who Should Nominate

This award celebrates sustainability leaders from across every corner of the beauty industry

Sustainable Beauty Brands

Beauty brands that have made sustainability a genuine core strategy — not a marketing claim but a business model. Whether you are a small indie brand that built sustainability into your DNA from day one, or an established brand that has undergone a meaningful sustainability transformation, if you have tangible results to share, this award is for you.

Eco-Conscious Product Manufacturers

Contract manufacturers and private label manufacturers who have invested in sustainable production infrastructure — renewable energy, water recycling systems, zero-waste manufacturing processes, responsibly sourced raw materials, and sustainable packaging capabilities. The manufacturers behind sustainable beauty products are too rarely recognised for their essential contribution.

Ethical Beauty Companies

Beauty companies where ethical practices extend beyond environmental sustainability to encompass fair labour, cruelty-free testing, inclusive business practices, community investment, and honest marketing. True ethical beauty is about how a company treats every stakeholder — from the farmer who grows its ingredients to the consumer who buys its products.

B Corp Certified Brands

Beauty companies that have achieved B Corporation certification — the gold standard of verified social and environmental accountability in business. B Corp beauty brands have demonstrated through rigorous third-party assessment that they meet the highest standards of performance, accountability, and transparency across governance, workers, community, environment, and customers.

Packaging Innovators

Companies developing or deploying innovative sustainable packaging solutions for the beauty industry — whether as packaging manufacturers creating new material solutions, beauty brands implementing pioneering refill systems, or organisations building the infrastructure for packaging collection and circularity at scale. Packaging is the most visible dimension of beauty's sustainability challenge, and its most creative problem-solvers deserve recognition.

Sustainability Advocates in Beauty

Industry voices, organisations, platforms, and movements that are driving the broader sustainability conversation in beauty — through media, education, regulation, industry standards, consumer campaigns, or collaborative initiatives that raise the bar for the entire sector. Individual sustainability leaders within large beauty companies who have driven meaningful change from within are equally eligible.

Judging Standards

How We Evaluate Sustainable Beauty

Our panel of sustainability experts, beauty executives, and environmental advocates apply eight key criteria

01

Authenticity & Ambition

The degree to which sustainability is embedded in the brand's core strategy and identity rather than applied as a marketing overlay. Judges look for evidence that sustainability commitments predate the commercial opportunity — brands that chose the harder path before it was fashionable, and that continue to set ambitious targets beyond regulatory minimums.

02

Measurable Environmental Impact

Quantifiable evidence of positive environmental outcomes — tonnes of plastic eliminated, percentage of recycled content achieved, litres of water saved, verified carbon emissions reductions, hectares of biodiverse sourcing habitat protected. Judges are deeply sceptical of vague sustainability commitments without measurable, independently verifiable outcomes attached to them.

03

Third-Party Verification

The extent to which sustainability claims are backed by credible independent certification — B Corp, Fairtrade, COSMOS Organic, Rainforest Alliance, FSC, Carbon Trust, or equivalent. Judges distinguish between genuine certified achievement and self-reported sustainability claims, with verified performance earning significantly higher scores.

04

Supply Chain Transparency

The depth of the brand's understanding of and accountability for its supply chain — from primary ingredient sourcing to manufacturing, distribution, and end-of-life. Judges assess whether the brand can trace its key ingredients to source, what it knows about the social and environmental conditions at those sources, and what it is doing to continuously improve them.

05

Product Formulation Responsibility

The environmental profile of the brand's formulations — the biodegradability of ingredients, the exclusion of environmentally harmful chemistry (microplastics, certain UV filters, endocrine disruptors), the use of natural and organic certified ingredients, and the brand's approach to ingredient safety beyond regulatory minimums for both human health and ecosystem protection.

06

Packaging Sustainability

The brand's packaging environmental footprint — the recyclability of primary and secondary packaging, the percentage of recycled content used, the availability of refillable options, the elimination of unnecessary packaging layers, and the brand's progress toward packaging circularity. Packaging sustainability is evaluated against best-in-class benchmarks, not industry average performance.

07

Social & Community Impact

The brand's contribution to the wellbeing of the human communities in its supply chain and its operating environment — fair wages, safe working conditions, community development investment, support for indigenous and smallholder ingredient producers, and the brand's wider social impact agenda. Genuine sustainability is always both environmental and social.

08

Leadership & Industry Influence

The degree to which the brand is influencing the wider beauty industry's sustainability performance — by publishing its practices openly to enable others to learn, by engaging in policy and regulatory dialogue, by participating in industry coalitions, or by setting standards through its own practice that competitors feel compelled to match. Sustainability leadership means raising the whole industry.

How It Works

The Nomination Process

A transparent, evidence-based process that rewards genuine sustainability achievement

1

Submit Your Nomination

Complete the nomination form with a detailed account of your sustainability achievements — what you have done, how you measured it, what evidence supports your claims, and what third-party certifications or verifications you hold. Sustainability reports, certification documents, impact metrics, case studies, and supply chain data all strengthen your nomination considerably. The more specific your evidence, the more competitive your nomination.

2

Expert Sustainability Review

Nominations are reviewed by World Beauty Awards sustainability judges — a panel that includes sustainability professionals, environmental scientists, ethical sourcing specialists, and beauty industry executives with deep sustainability expertise. Our judges are equipped to distinguish between genuine sustainability leadership and greenwashing, and they do so rigorously.

3

Shortlist Announced

Shortlisted brands are announced across World Beauty Awards media channels and our sustainability media partners. The shortlist serves as an independently curated guide to the beauty industry's sustainability leaders — referenced by retailers, investors, press, and consumers navigating the growing but still opaque sustainable beauty landscape. Shortlist recognition alone carries significant commercial value.

4

Winners Celebrated

Category winners are announced at the World Beauty Awards ceremony in a dedicated sustainable beauty moment that reflects the central importance of sustainability to the future of the industry. Winners receive their official trophy, winner seal, and full benefit package activation — including press distribution, retail partner promotion, and placement in the World Beauty Awards Sustainable Beauty Showcase.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my brand need to be certified organic or natural to enter the Sustainable Beauty Awards?

No. While organic and natural certifications are positively regarded by our judges, they are not a prerequisite. Sustainability encompasses a far broader set of practices — carbon reduction, packaging innovation, ethical sourcing, water stewardship, circular business models, and more. A brand without organic certification that has achieved extraordinary packaging sustainability or supply chain transparency can be highly competitive. We assess the full breadth of sustainability achievement, not any single certification.

How does the panel identify greenwashing and distinguish it from genuine sustainability?

Our judging panel includes sustainability professionals experienced at distinguishing genuine achievement from marketing rhetoric. Judges look for specificity (precise metrics, not vague claims), verification (third-party certifications and audits, not self-assertion), proportionality (claims proportionate to the scale of action taken), and consistency (sustainability embedded across the business, not limited to a single product or campaign). Nominations that cannot substantiate their claims with specific, verifiable evidence will not be competitive.

Can a large established beauty company that has recently begun its sustainability journey enter?

Yes. We welcome nominations from beauty companies at every stage of their sustainability journey, provided the achievements being nominated are genuine and verifiable. A large company demonstrating meaningful, measurable progress — even if its starting point was poor — can be highly competitive, particularly if the scale of their operations means that even incremental percentage improvements represent significant absolute environmental impact. Ambition, honesty about the starting point, and demonstrable progress all count.

Is the Carbon-Neutral Brand category open to brands that have achieved carbon neutrality through offsets alone?

Brands that have achieved carbon neutrality through offsetting without significant emissions reduction are unlikely to be competitive for this category. Our judges look for brands on a credible decarbonisation pathway — with science-based emissions reduction targets, a verifiable track record of year-on-year emissions reductions, and the responsible use of high-quality carbon offsets only for genuinely unavoidable residual emissions. Carbon neutrality by offsetting alone, without a reduction roadmap, is not considered leadership by our panel.

Can sustainability advocates, NGOs, or industry organisations enter the Sustainable Beauty Leadership category?

Yes. The Sustainable Beauty Leadership category is specifically designed to recognise contributions that go beyond individual brand performance to advance the entire industry's sustainability agenda. NGOs, industry associations, media platforms, campaign organisations, and individual sustainability advocates who have demonstrably moved the industry's sustainability conversation forward are fully eligible and actively encouraged to nominate.

What is the most common reason otherwise strong nominations are not shortlisted?

The most common reason strong nominations do not advance is insufficient evidence. Excellent sustainability programmes that are not documented with metrics, not supported by third-party verification, or not described with sufficient specificity cannot be fairly evaluated by the Jury team or the Management of Golden Tree relative to nominations that are well-evidenced. We strongly recommend including your most recent sustainability report, any relevant certifications, and the most specific quantitative data available to you. Stories without numbers rarely outscore stories with both.
